Ice House Fishing Rental FAQs

All your questions answered

Reservations & Booking

When does the season run?

The season runs from Christmas week through late March, depending on ice conditions. Prime weekends in January and February fill up first — the sooner you reach out, the better your chances of landing your preferred dates.

How do I make a reservation?

Use the contact form on our website or call us at 218-783-2022. Because Jeff runs a small, personal operation, every booking is handled one-on-one. Note your preferred dates, party size, and any questions right in the comments section of the form.

How far in advance should I book?

As early as possible. Holiday weekends and peak January and February dates go fast. If you have a specific weekend in mind, do not wait. See the rental page for available shack sizes and rates.

Can I call to book instead of using the contact form?

Absolutely. Call 218-783-2022. You will be talking to Jeff and his family — not a call center.

Do you require a deposit?

Contact us for current deposit and payment requirements. We will go over all the details when you confirm your dates. Reach us here or call 218-783-2022.

Rates & Pricing

How are rates structured?

Rates are priced per person for a full 2- or 3-night stay, with the third night always free. The best per-person rate is achieved when a shack is booked at full capacity. See the full rate table on our rental page.

What is included in the rate?

Every package includes taxes and minnows — no surprise charges at check-out. The shacks come walk-in ready with bunks, tables, chairs, shelves, a gas cooktop, gas lighting, and electrical outlets. Full details are on the rental page.

Is the third night always free?

Yes. All sleeper packages cover a full 2- or 3-night stay at the listed per-person rate, with the third night included at no extra charge.

What if we want to stay longer than three nights?

Additional nights beyond the included stay are just $25 per person, per night. Let us know when booking, and we will confirm extended-stay availability.

Are there group discounts?

The best per-person rate is reached when you fill your shack. A 6-person shack with 6 people, for example, puts everyone at the lowest available rate. Booking at full capacity is the built-in group discount. Review all shack sizes and rates on the rental page.

The Shacks

What shack sizes are available?

We offer four sizes: 4-person (13×17 ft), 6-person (13×22 ft), 8-person (13×28 ft), and 10-person (13×34 ft). Every size includes bunks, tables, chairs, and shelves. See full dimensions and per-person rates on the rental page.

What does "walk-in ready" mean?

You show up, walk in, and start fishing. Jeff has everything set up before you arrive — tables, chairs, rod holders, and your minnows are already waiting. Bring your gear and food; we handle the rest.

Are shacks heated?

Yes. All shacks are fully heated and well-insulated. You will be comfortable even when it is well below zero outside. The floors sit close to the ice for easy fishing access without losing heat.

What appliances and utilities does each shack have?

Each shack includes gas lighting, a gas cooktop, and electrical outlets. You can run a TV, toaster, or microwave. See our packing list for what to bring to make the most of the setup.

Who decides where the shacks are place on the lake?

Jeff does, personally. After more than 38 years on Lake of the Woods, he selects time-proven locations and plows the access roads himself. Learn more about Jeff and his team on the About page.

What to Bring

Do I need to bring fishing gear?

Yes. Bring your own rods, jigs, tackle, rod holders, and a flasher unit (Vexilar or Marcum). Live minnows are included in your rate and will be waiting in the shack when you arrive. For gear recommendations, see our Ice Fishing Gear page.

Do I need to bring bedding?

Yes. The shacks have sturdy, comfortable bunks, but you will need to bring your own sleeping bag or blankets and a pillow.

What clothing should I pack?

Dress for a Minnesota winter. If you plan to fish outside at any point, bring warm insulated boots, mittens, and a hat. Inside the heated shack, lighter layers and a pair of slippers or shoes for the floor will keep you comfortable all day.

Do I need to bring food?

Yes. Plan meals for each day of your stay. Bring a cooler, water, beverages, and a basic cooking kit — pots, pans, a coffee pot, and utensils. Do not forget oil and seasoning for your walleye. Each shack has a gas cooktop ready to go.

Is there a printable packing list?

Yes. The full list is on our Packing List page and is available as a downloadable PDF — save it or print it before you head out.

Fishing & Licenses

Do I need a Minnesota fishing license?

Yes. All anglers — residents and non-residents alike — must have a valid Minnesota fishing license. Purchase yours through the Minnesota DNR website before you arrive.

What species can we expect to catch?

Lake of the Woods is world-class walleye water, and that is what we are best known for. You will also find sauger, yellow perch, northern pike, tulibee, and eelpout in season. Visit our Fish Species page for more detail on each.

Do you offer guided fishing?

Jeff's is a personal service operation, not a guided charter. That said, Jeff and his staff — Robbie and Aaron — have decades of hands-on experience on Lake of the Woods and are glad to help you read your flasher, adjust your presentation, and put you on fish. You are never left to figure it out on your own. Learn more about the team on the About page.

Can we fish outside the shack?

Yes, though most guests find in-shack fishing plenty productive. If you plan to fish outside, pack accordingly for the cold. See the packing list for cold-weather clothing recommendations.

Location & Directions

Where are you located?

Jeff's Ice-O-Miniums is based in Williams, Minnesota in the Lake of the Woods area — the Williams, Baudette, and Warroad corridor in far northwestern Minnesota. Full details and a map are on our Directions page.

How do we get out ot the shacks once we arrive?

Jeff plows the access roads himself. You will receive directions to the access point when you confirm your reservation. If you have any questions about getting out to your shack, call 218-783-2022.

Is there parking at the access point?

Yes. You can leave your vehicle at the access point for the duration of your stay. Full access details are provided when you confirm your booking and are also on the Directions page.

General & Policies

Is this a good trip for first-timers?

Absolutely. Jeff's has been introducing people to Lake of the Woods ice fishing since 1988. The shacks are walk-in ready, minnows are waiting, and the family is here to answer questions. It is designed to be simple — show up and start fishing.

Is this trip suitable for families and kids?

Yes. We welcome groups of all kinds — families, friend groups, corporate outings, and school trips. Kids who have never ice-fished before often end up with the biggest catches of the weekend.

What is your cancellation policy?

Contact us directly at 218-783-2022 or through the contact form for current cancellation and rescheduling information. We will work with you whenever possible.

What happens if ice conditions are unsafe?

Guest safety is the priority. Jeff monitors ice conditions and will communicate with you directly if anything affects your planned stay. Lake of the Woods is one of the most reliable big-water fisheries in the region for seasonal ice, but Minnesota weather is always a factor and we stay on top of it.

I have a question not answered here. How do I reach you?

Call 218-783-2022 or use the contact form. Jeff's is a personal operation, and someone from the family will get back to you.
